House Passes H.R. 5759,
the Preventing Executive Overreach on Immigration Act of 2014

On December 4, 2014, the House passed H.R. 5759, the Preventing Executive Overreach on Immigration Act of 2014, by a vote of 219 to 197.  The bill would provide that the Federal Government cannot exempt or defer—by Executive Order, regulation, or any other means—removal of categories of aliens considered under immigration law to be unlawfully present.  The bill would take effect retroactively, and would apply to requests for work authorization or deferred status submitted on or after November 20, 2014. It now goes to the Senate for consideration.
